PM Modi South Africa Visit Live: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday set off on a three-day visit to South Africa to participate in the first-ever G20 Summit hosted on African soil.
During his stay in Johannesburg, he will also take part in the sixth IBSA Summit, being held on the sidelines of the G20 meetings.
“I will present India’s perspective at the Summit in line with our vision of ‘Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam’ and ‘One Earth, One Family, One Future’,” Modi said in his departure statement.
What are the objectives of G20?
The G20 doesn’t officially list three fixed objectives, but its work broadly revolves around three core aims that are widely recognised across its communiqués and summit agendas.
1. Ensuring Global Economic Stability
- Coordinating macroeconomic policies among major economies.
- Preventing and responding to global financial crises.
- Promoting sustainable, balanced, and inclusive growth.
2. Reforming and Strengthening Global Financial Governance
- Improving the functioning of institutions like the IMF and World Bank.
- Enhancing financial regulation, transparency, and supervision.
- Addressing issues such as tax evasion, corruption, and illicit financial flows.
3. Addressing Global Development and Policy Challenges
- Tackling issues beyond economics: climate change, energy, health, digital transformation.
- Supporting sustainable development (aligned with SDGs).
- Promoting fair trade, resilient supply chains, and development finance.
